About the Conference

Launched in 2024, the International Scientific Conference on Islamic Moral Economy and Finance (IMEF) was born from a vision shared by Suad Bećirović, Alija Avdukić, Muhammad Al-Saghir, and Haris Zogić. Our mission is to establish a leading international platform in Novi Pazar where global experts, scholars, and professionals can exchange ideas and cultivate innovative solutions within the field of Islamic economics.

Our Vision: Beyond the Invisible Hand

At this crucial juncture in human history, we face profound economic and ecological challenges. Our world grapples with rising costs, inflation, wealth disparities, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Contemporary economics textbooks often resemble weather reports—passively observing phenomena and citing an “invisible hand” as if human agency were absent.

We believe that market mechanisms are the result of human decisions and values. Therefore, the crises we face—from carbon emissions to resource depletion—are fundamentally crises of character and ethics. IMEF serves as a collective moral compass to re-evaluate our priorities and shift our global economic approach.

The Mathematical Reality of Growth

We must honestly address the sustainability of the continuous GDP growth model. Consider the undeniable mathematical reality: An average growth of 5% doubles economic activity every 14 years.Even a modest 2% growth doubles GDP every 35 years. This relentless pace raises a critical question:

From where will the resources for this growth be sourced?

The dominant “take, make, dispose” linear consumption model has driven developed nations forward, but at the cost of global instability and environmental damage.

The Principle of Mīzān (Balance)

To address these and other challenges, IMEF emphasizes a return to Mīzān—the divine balance that governs nature and human behavior:
  • Trust (Amānah): We view the world's resources not as property to be exploited, but as a trust to be managed with moderation and justice.
  • Moderation (Wasatiyyah): We advocate for economic resilience through the avoidance of waste (Isrāf) and the elimination of harm (Ḍarar).
  • Shared Value: By mobilizing tools such as Zakat, Waqf, and risk-sharing finance, we aim to ease the financial burdens of daily life and support a circular economy.

A Platform for Change

Now in its third edition, IMEF continues to attract diverse global experts to Novi Pazar. The attendance of leading experts highlights the growing importance of Islamic economic principles in creating a more equitable and sustainable future for generations to come.
